105 years of Tradition

Monte's Trattoria is an Italian institution in New York City, boasting a rich and storied history that spans over a century. Established in the early 20th century, the trattoria has become a symbol of Italian-American culture and cuisine in the heart of New York.

The restaurant was founded in 1918 by Louis & Sylvia Medica, Italian immigrants who arrived in the United States with a dream of sharing the flavors of their Italian homeland with Americans. The Medica family took over the storefront on 97 MacDougal Street from Terragni Wines, and when Monte's Trattoria opened its doors in the Greenwich Village neighborhood, they instantly attracted locals and tourists alike with their authentic dishes and warm hospitality.

Over the years, Monte's Trattoria evolved into a gathering place for generations of New Yorkers, fostering a sense of community and tradition. It became a popular spot for families celebrating special occasions, friends catching up over a hearty meal, and couples enjoying a romantic dinner. Throughout its history, the trattoria has witnessed various changes in New York City's culinary landscape. However, it has managed to preserve its authenticity and timeless charm, making it a go-to destination for those seeking a genuine Italian dining experience.

Today, Monte’s legacy is preserved by Chef Pietro Mosconi, who carries forth the authentic culinary treasures of Northern Italy, hailing from the picturesque region of Emilia-Romagna. Engaging warmly with patrons, Chef Pietro often graces the dining room with his presence, fostering a welcoming and familial ambiance. Overseeing the restaurant's operations, Peter, Chef Pietro's son, adeptly preserves Monte's cherished traditions. The dedicated waiters and bartenders, known by name, exude approachable charm and a sincere eagerness to delight.

As the restaurant enters its 105th year, it continues to thrive, attracting new patrons while still retaining a loyal following of longtime customers. Monte's Trattoria remains a testament to the power of preserving culinary traditions and creating a sense of belonging in the bustling metropolis of New York City.
