Chef Pietro Mosconi

Award-winning chef Pietro Mosconi was born in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy in a small village, in the province of Piacenza. It was here where Pietro was first exposed to traditional Northern Italian cuisine which had a profound influence on his cooking today. The Mosconi family had a small farm where Pietro began working on at a young age. His tasks included growing produce and caring for the livestock but he most enjoyed assisting his mother and grandmother in preparing pastas and breads.

In 1966, Pietro and his father Paolo headed to America aboard the Michelangelo ship in search of new opportunities. The first year was extremely difficult adjusting and learning the language but soon after Pietro began to gain experience in the culinary field. With each hardship came a new opportunity and with each opportunity came a new promotion. While working a full-time schedule, Pietro also began to take courses at the New York City College of Technology expanding his education of the culinary arts. During this time Pietro worked for notable restaurants Giambelli, Romeo Salta, and Ginos of Lexington Ave.

During his first ten years in America Pietro was approached by several investors to partner with and open a place as far as Hawaii but Pietro was determined to open his own business in New York. In 1976, Pietro with his siblings opened Villa Mosconi on MacDougal Street in a space that was formerly known as Mona Lisa. The restaurant had become a neighborhood favorite and with its success the Mosconi family purchased the old-time favorite Monte’s Trattoria in 1983, located just one block up on MacDougal Street. Today, Pietro is most often seen in the heart of Greenwich Village on MacDougal Street at Monte’s Trattoria.

In addition to his daily involvement at Monte's Trattoria,  Pietro serves on the board of The Chefs de Cuisine Association of America and participates in mentoring young chefs through apprentice programs. He also serves as a member of several culinary organizations including the Chaine de Rotisseurs and Les Amis D'Escoffier Society of New York. In 2007, Pietro was honored at the James Beard House and hosted an Italian luncheon. Pietro was the recipient of Chef of the Year in 2005 from the Chefs de Cuisine Association of America.
